Kolkata Korner

"When you return home from a hard day's work and if your husband orders you to get him a glass of water, reply back and ask him to get it himself," Bhattacharjee told the amused women. But the next moment, he backtracked: "Don't take me seriously, I was just joking". So did he, in fact, then say that women ought to continue putting up with being ordered around by their husbands? Did he mean that women shouldn't assert themselves and resist exploitation or harassment by men? And come to think of it, why should a woman need to earn money to gain respect from her husband? Doesn't a women who's not working contribute enough already by way of managing the house, rearing and bringing up the children and cooking all meals and slaving to meet sundry demands of her family? Will the real Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee stand up please?

Hi Aditi,
Thank you for the clarification. Your observations are facts. I do need to go beyond this post and write The Little Magazine a letter to the Editor, in order that it may be brought to the notice of the Noble laureate.

Keshu,
You wicked, naughty boy! "I'm not a thief or at least the records say that I'm not one...ergo I'm a paragon of virtue"  Quite brilliant and a hard hit on the Noble Laureate! Alas, sitting in far countries and asking for Reports from here, it seems has put a lot of mud in the face of the highly esteemed. Thanks for your comment.

Mr Datta,
many accuse our honorable Prof Sen about one with wings on his feet, when it comes to visits to India. Its always touch and go. So he is guilty on that account and really he has a fantastic team of researchers in Pratichi Foundation, the organization formed with the proceeds of his Prize Money, frankly in order to do serious essays he needs to engage his own team. As he does in projects related to healthcare or education, in India. Thank you for your comment.

Hi Julia,

The HT editorial states that the index of crime rate published  by the National Crime Registry is heavily loaded towards population, though NCB has chosen not to openly admit it to be so. If this is indeed correct, even among Indian cities, if you consider population of Kolkata vis a vis  say Patna, is it any wonder that Kolkata will have lower crime rate than Patna? Therefore, the extent of this 'low' crime rate needs probing, controlling inter-alia for population. But we need not "bite dust", at least not yet... , should wait for further research.

Hi Julia,

Very interesting article by the learned professor, but somehow I feel like something's missing.

He's trying to say that though Calcutta is very poor, the crime rate is less, in fact the least among 35 Indian cities. Well, first reaction: Bravo! He also says that the cities with a higher crime rate are wealthier in comparison. Ergo, poverty is not related to violence, but wealth is.

Wasn't too convincing. He's also quoting statistics from Mexico, Sao Paulo, Buenos Aires and Rio. Apples & oranges I'm afraid. This is like those statistics problems that start with: "All other things remaining constant....."

To me, this theory sounds very wishy washy. Looks like he's twisting the facts to suit the conclusion. Is that what we expect from a Nobel Laureate? Not quite sure.

I have a theory too:
I'm not a thief or at least the records say that I'm not one...ergo I'm a paragon of virtue.
How brainy is that?

cheers,

Keshav

Julia Dutta,

It is interesting.Yes- if CPI(M) is defeated - there will not be any "Govt.sponsored crimes".I have seen Dr.Amartya Sen from his Shantineketan days - he thinks he knows the ground reality like most NRIs believe they know India better from whereever they are by their 2-3 weeks visit.

I gave up my subscription of Little Magazine last year - because they do not need " Un-noted" ( vide blog by Aditi Ray ) readers.

If Tripura results are indicators - then intellectuals may be in for another 5 years " CPI(M) cadre rule.

Regards.

Indu,
You have travelled to masarovar and Mt Kailash, and have been at Yama's gate and returned safly with your sweetheart, why should Ma kali then be deprived of seeing one of Her most lovely children? You must go. She will take care of you and see that you leave the city safely.
