In the final shot, as Gyanvati runs to save Churiya from the evil hands of widow sex-work and a life of a widow, we see that at least “one flew over the cuckoo’s nest”... Expand

Good observation with the train. I agree with the review, Lisa Ray looked like she walked out of a magazine ad and I could not relate to her.

Julia,

Not seen ‘Water’ but it appears that Deepa Mehta tried to sensationalise the tormented lives of young widows of that era with foreign viewership firmly within her frame… But ending the film quoting the 1991 census will unfairly give a wrong impression about the present scenario in our country…

Bikash,
There is no saying that the widows depicted were from Bengal. They were but when the world sees them, they will see it in the light of the fact that this is the case in India. So the Bengali depiction is for you and me to understand...the rest of the world, where even basic information about India is poor, Deepa, has shown irresponsibility! Do you know only last year in the Netherlands, my partner was asked by the wife of the Vice Chansellor or the University she went to teach in, "are there roads in India" Its appalling! Give such a audience Water, they will make a bigger hash of it! So to that extent, everyone involved in anything to do with Media, has to be more responsible and must move from their pretty buts and do some solid legwork or mention what they are depicting. Whats worse is she ended the film with material taken from the 1991 Census of widows in India!! If the Census is outdated she needed to move her buts and do work, scan, interview, measure results. I frankly have lost hope on that girl! She needs to grow up!

Julia,
I am not a film buff. I have not seen the film. But as the story suggest I think one cannot fully disagree if the background of the film is early twentieth century. Most of the Bengali literature during that period does depict the miserable conditions of the widows. I do agree today it is entirely different. Today's Bengali society is the most tolerant tsociety owards widows compared to rest of India.
